Experience the journey that inspired Turkish Bath & Home’s sustainable luxury textiles—reviving Turkish artisan weaving, tradition and organic craftsmanship.
This is the story of one Australian entrepreneur who is helping preserve the 9000 year old handwoven textile tradition and turning these traditional artisan woven techniques into luxury textiles items for your home.
It was one of those pivotal moments, a life changing opportunity when founder of Turkish Bath & Home – Pip Orr - was trekking through the rugged terrain of Turkiye, witnessing one prehistorical moment after another, visiting local families who showered her with kindness and love to arrive at two places that would change and produce the very essence of Turkish Bath & Home.
Rooted in centuries-old Turkish artisan weaving traditions, our partners empowered Pip to build a brand that brings premium, ethically certified organic cotton textiles to modern homes. Every piece is sustainably handwoven using ancient techniques that support Turkish weavers, preserve their heritage, and help uplift the artisan communities and families who keep this craft alive.
Surrounded by the history and looking at the traditional weaves, Pip decided to bring the traditional weaves to Australia. Her goal is to support their communities and produce something for the World and especially Australia that is for the discerning home buyer wanting not only luxury items, but items that support the environment, the community, support ancient weaves, customs and sustainable practices.
For the owner of the textile flat and thick loop weave business, it was her story on how she resurrected an ancient form of traditional weaving that enticed Pip. Sixteen years ago, there were only five traditional shuttle loom weavers left in Turkiye – it was a dying tradition. Today, this business supports over 600 weavers, their families and communities. Maintaining the tradition and becoming the only supplier in Turkiye to offer unique luxury handwoven textiles in GOTS certified organic cotton. Pip was attracted to not only the finished products, but the ethics, the tradition and a community-based business that maintains sustainable practices and offers certified organic products. All practices close to Pip’s heart.
Travelling to the centre of Turkiye, Pip met with the owner of a business that supplies kilims and rugs arriving from many regions across Turkiye and neighbouring countries. These are all handwoven by the women in their homes using only local wool, cotton and goats’ hair.
Sitting in the special showroom surrounded by these kilims and rugs situated within the iconic fairy chimney stone caves and spires which sweep across the rugged and barren landscape in Cappadocia – Pip was introduced to the traditional kilims and rugs that have shaped history for thousands of years. It was an immersion of woven colour, intricate story telling weaves that are one-off art pieces each telling a story of the history in each region. The weaves of all these kilims and rugs are produced on special looms, handwoven at home by the women using special characteristics and motifs for each region.
Surrounded by these pieces of art and mesmerised by their beauty, each depicting their own story of the region, the family, the culture and community – Pip took the plunge and now shares these magnificent pieces in Australia.
Extensively utilising her existing skills, building the business and the brand, the creation of Turkish Bath & Home became the essence of traditional, handwoven textiles by the artisans in Turkiye to produce luxury craft and home wares. We have created the business that produces certified organic textiles that look and feel good, ethically sound, last a life time and give back to the community of Turkiye.
